PROGETTARE PER L’ERRORE: DONALD NORMAN E IL SUPERAMENTO DEL PARADIGMA DELL’ERRORE UMANO NELLA USER EXPERIENCE

Abstract (Italiano)

Abstract (English)

Digital interface design has traditionally been influenced by the assumption that user errors primarily result from individual cognitive limitations or inappropriate behaviour. Building on Donald Norman’s work, this perspective has gradually been replaced by a design paradigm in which errors are interpreted as indicators of system deficiencies rather than user failures. This paper critically reconstructs this theoretical shift through the analysis of Norman’s key concepts, including the seven stages of action, the gulfs of execution and evaluation, affordances, signifiers, mapping, feedback, conceptual models, and human-centred design. The article argues that contemporary User Experience should be understood as a discipline focused not on eliminating human error but on designing systems capable of preventing errors, supporting recovery, and facilitating meaningful interaction. Finally, an interpretative model is proposed, describing UX design as the progressive reduction of the cognitive distance between the designer’s conceptual model and the user’s mental model.
